Mumbai Metro Line 9: A New Era in Urban Connectivity

In a significant leap towards enhancing Mumbai's public transportation infrastructure, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the trial run of Metro Line 9 on May 14, 2025. This marks a pivotal development in the city's metro expansion plans

๐Ÿš‡ What Is Metro Line 9?

Metro Line 9 is an extension of Metro Line 7, stretching 13.6 km from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar in Thane district. This elevated corridor aims to alleviate traffic congestion on the Western Express Highway and provide a seamless connection between Mumbai and neighboring areas. The line is expected to serve approximately 1.1 million commuters daily by 2031.

๐Ÿ› ️ Progress So Far

As of now, 96% of the civil work and 75% of system integration have been completed. The trial runs commenced on the 4.4 km stretch between Dahisar East and Kashigaon, focusing on dynamic testing, load evaluations, signaling, traction checks, and emergency preparedness drills. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to open this stretch to the public by the end of 2025.

๐Ÿ—บ️ Key Features and Connectivity

  • Stations: The initial phase will include stations at Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.

  • Interchange Points: Metro Line 9 will connect with Metro Line 7 at Dahisar East and Metro Line 2A at Gundavli, facilitating easy transfers across the network.

  • Future Extensions: Plans are in place to extend the line further, with the complete corridor expected to be operational by December 2025.

๐ŸŒฑ Sustainable Development

In line with eco-friendly initiatives, the project has undertaken a comprehensive tree survey at the proposed depot site in Dongri. Out of 2,500 affected trees, 1,668 will be preserved, including 574 that will be transplanted, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

๐Ÿšฆ What Lies Ahead

The completion of Metro Line 9 is anticipated to significantly ease road and rail congestion, especially for daily commuters from Mira Bhayandar. The integration with existing and upcoming metro lines will provide a robust and efficient public transportation system, contributing to Mumbai's sustainable urban growth.
