Rain, Rookies, and a Rogue Bat: Carson McCusker’s Wild MLB Moment

May 20, 2025 — Baseball fans watching Monday’s rainy showdown between the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians got more than they bargained for — including an unexpected bat launch into left field.

In just his second day in the majors, Twins outfielder Carson McCusker made a memorable, if slightly unintentional, debut highlight. During a slippery third-inning swing, McCusker lost control of his bat, which soared high and landed in left field — nearly hitting Guardians fielder Kyle Manzardo.

Thankfully, no one was injured, and the moment quickly turned from concern to light-hearted replay fodder across social media. The soggy conditions certainly didn’t help, as rain steadily fell throughout the early innings.

The game itself was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to worsening weather and is set to resume Tuesday, May 20 at 5:10 p.m. CT. At the time of suspension, the Twins were leading 2-1. Kyle Manzardo had opened scoring for the Guardians with a first-inning RBI double, while the Twins answered with an RBI single from Ty France and a double by Willi Castro in the second.

Twins pitcher Bailey Ober went three innings, allowing one run and striking out three. Guardians starter Logan Allen matched him inning for inning, giving up two runs with three strikeouts of his own.

As for McCusker, his MLB call-up came just a day earlier, on May 18, following injuries to Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa. The 6'8" outfielder had been tearing it up in Triple-A St. Paul, hitting .350 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs in 38 games — numbers that demanded attention from the Twins' front office.

Though his flying bat might be his most viral moment so far, McCusker is quickly proving he belongs in the big leagues. With more games ahead and the weather hopefully cooperating, Twins fans can expect to see plenty more of him — hopefully with the bat staying in his hands.
